File: AI-ANNUAL-REPORT_2016-17.pdfAt the conclusion of a hearing under the procedures of UWS 14.08, and when a sanction of suspension, or expulsion is prescribed by a nonacademic hearing committee or examiner, the respondent may appeal the decision to the Chancellor. Any other sanction may not be appealed to the Chancellor. The deadline for an appeal to the Chancellor is 10 days from the date of delivery to the respondent. Students should send their written appeals to the Chancellor at chancellor@news.wisc.edu.
The Chancellor shall sustain the decision of the nonacademic misconduct hearing committee or examiner unless the Chancellor finds any of the following:
The Chancellor’s decision is based on a review of the record only – no meetings or oral arguments will take place. The Chancellor’s decision will be provided in writing to the respondent, and they may remand the matter for consideration by a different hearing committee, or, in the alternative, may invoke an appropriate remedy of his or her own. See UWS 14.09.

Academic Misconduct Flow Chart for Process and Sanctions
File: Academic_Integrity_Flowchart.pngWhen a student is found responsible for academic misconduct the sanctions that can be applied are outlined in UWS 14 and divided into three groups. Group A and Group B sanctions are determined by the instructor. Group C is determined by the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards (OSCCS).
Sanctions in Group A and B have a level of proof of preponderance of the evidence. This means the instructor believes that it is more likely than not the misconduct occurred. Sanctions in these groups are determined by the instructor, but they should check with their department to see if there are departmental guidelines. OSCCS is also available to consult.
Sanctions in Group C require a higher level of proof than Group A and B. OSCCS must find the evidence of misconduct to be clear and convincing. Group C sanctions are considered for egregious acts of misconduct, second offenses for undergraduate students, and first offenses for graduate/professional school students.
